Lord Dike Udensi

In July last year,2012,Abiriba,the Small London of Africa in Abia State lost an illustrous son,a great iroko tree,a father, brother, mentor, philanthropist, business merchant,a hero, and one of the wealthiest son of the soil,in the person of Chief Lord Dike Udensi: Ikeoha 1 of Abiriba Kingdom (Strength of All) . It was really a sad and tearful day as a rare gem and an icon had gone to rest with his maker after a long fight with ill health.

As a little girl growing up in Aba then, the name DUBIC was a household name, and when you are talking about wealthy and successful men in my community the name Dubic will be among the top five on the list to be mentioned with the likes of many great men of wealth such as Chief Nnanna Kalu, Chief Okafor Mang, Chief Nwojo Omokorie, all of blessed memory. He was a kindred soul,a giver and really contributed in raising many young Abiriba sons and daughters in their various vocations, gives schorlarships to those who could not afford to pay their fees, and employed many of our graduates especially in the then Citizens International Bank and other companies. You do not need to know him for him to help, because saying you are a son or daughter of Abiriba is the magic word that will usher you into his presence.

Today,Saturday the 13th day of July 2013,Chief Lord Dike Udensi Ifegwu (DUBIC) is being laid to mother earth in his Hometown Amogudu, Abiriba in Abia State of Nigeria.

Late Lord Chief Dike Udensi was a pioneer in many ways. He was known to be the first Nigerian to solely establish a brewery that produced Dubic Beer. Guinness Breweries Nigeria is reaping bountifully from the brand today as its on lease to them and the demand for the beer is very high.  He was equally among the few importers of stockfish, and second hand clothes (commonly known as Okirika) in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. He has huge  investments in properties with houses in various parts of the world.  Little wonder the Queen  of England honoured him with the honourary award of  Lord Mayor.  He is also believed to have investments in other blue chip companies in Nigeria and the world round. He committed his mind and soul to large scale importation and distribution of various goods, attracting the attention of the big four banks then: Union, First, U.B.A and Afribank. At the young age of 30 in 1981, of the over 20 factories established by Abiriba people in Aba, he alone owned three namely: Dubic breweries (brewers of Dubic Beer), Dubic Industries and Unijoy Paper Mills  The late Dike, before his death, was building a mighty edifice of a plaza in Aba which is an avenue for job creation to the teeming unemployed youths and graduates.

At a very young age of 39,he was able to carve a niche and made a name for himself in the banking sector, becoming one of the major share holders in two banks: Alpha Merchant Bank and former Citizens /Spring Bank, now Enterprise Bank, where he was the Chairman.
In 1991, he joined others to establish a bank in Benin Republic called Banc Internationale du Benin, where he was made a Director.

Chief Udensi Ifegwu, was truthful to himself.  He called himself a trader and refused to be lured into any enterprise he could not clearly comprehend its nuances, no matter the projected profit. He was pragmatic in his business dealings, avoiding undue psychedelism, but with an eye on results. Though socially, he was extremely shy, he was humongously bold when it came to business decisions.
As this Abiriba Icon goes home at the young age of 61, it is important the country remembers him for the thousands of lives he touched through the various businesses he established. He exemplifies the notion that a person can be immensely successful, without government contract or government patronage, such as import duty waivers. His life is a testimony that university education or an MBA alone does not determine how successful a person would be.
All Abiriba sons and daughters are mourning you today.
Abia State,Nigeria,Africa and the world is mourning your untimely demise at a very young age, we love and cherish you!!
We will miss you big uncle, father, brother, mentor and icon! Adieu
Adieu oke ndikom Ukpaghiri
Adieu Dubic himself
Adieu Dimkpa Asaa
Adieu and may your gentle soul Rest in Perfect Peace Amen.

  1. My first stop over visit to Aba in my life journey was at your office in Azikiwe Road, from there, you sent some one who ex-courted me to were l was going. Still remembered that question. Onye ku nwata bia uzu? Meaning who brought this child to Aba? while l was living, You called me, held my hands and said, be a good boy, further said, You must remembered who you are and don’t forget to go to school. Your life so far spent was that of an Icon. You have come, see and conquered. Now is that time to say R.I.P. Your legacy lives on

  2. When I was in Primary School then , there are only two beer in Aba and its environ , DUBIC AND NBL. May the soul of Ikeoha 1 of Abiriba Kingdom Rest in Peace Amen
