Nigerians tasked on sanitation, hygiene culture
President of the Global Advocacy for Toilet and Sanitary Standards Initiative (GATSSI), Princess Miriam Onuoha has called on Nigerians to improve their sanitation and hygiene culture.
She made the call yesterday in Abuja at the launch of the organization and symposium on improving sanitary standards in Nigeria.
She said lack of basic sanitation and hygiene facilities and practices is dealing heavy unhealthy blows on people and the environment, adding, that is why her organization is starting a children friendly programme called Support My School Sanitation Campaign.
She said: “Sanitation facilities interrupt the transmission of faecal -oral disease at its most important source by preventing human faecal contamination of water and soil.”
Onuoha said GATSSI targets building 10, 000 toilets and water facilities in four years in schools, worship centres, and public buildings among others.
While urging adequate gender- responsive sanitary facilities to be prioritized for all school construction and rehabilitation projects, she called on the government, the private sector and all other actors to mobilize the requisite resources to rapidly increase access to basic sanitation.
